I drafted this one pager in the context of a bible study last summer on the Gospel of Mark. Some in the
class seemed skeptical about the the reality and import of Jesus' casting out unclean spirits. Far from being
quaint old tales from a simpler time that can be discounted, a brief survey of scripture demonstrates the true nature of the
demonic presence.
To anyone who believes in the supremacy of the Holy Bible when it comes to truth merely looking up the folowing references
should remove any doubt that you might have as to the existence, nature of and continued power in the world of the evil
one.
MEANING OF UNCLEAN SPIRIT
The
following are excerpts from The Unger’s New Bible Dictionary (1988), with
the exception of the two parentheticals:
1.
Spirit—“A term used in the Scriptures generally to denote purely spiritual beings; also the spiritual,
immortal part in man.”
2.
Demon—“Used once in the NT…NIV, ‘foreign gods’; NASB, ‘deities’…but
usually referring to the ministers of the devil (Luke 4:35, 9:1, 42; John 10:21; etc.); inferior spirit beings, Satan’s
angels who ‘did not keep their own domain’ (Jude 6; Matt. 25:41; Rev. 12:7, 9).
Satan is called the ‘ruler of the demons’ (Matt. 9:34, 12:24; Mark 3:22; Luke 11:15)…Demons are said
to enter into the body of a person to vex him with diseases…Paul, teaching that the gods of the Gentiles are a fiction
(1 Cor. 8:10-13), makes the beings answering to the heathen conceptions of the gods to be demons…”
(See
also Psalm 106:35-39; Deut. 32:16-17; and note that demons are also referenced as “fallen angels” in Unger’s)
3.
Divination—“…the art of obtaining secret knowledge, especially of the future, is a pagan counterpart
of prophecy…The biblical attitude toward divination is distinctly hostile (Deut. 18:10-12). The prophet of Jehovah is contrasted with diviners of all sorts and is set forth as the only authorized
medium of supernatural revelation…The worship of the true God is basically at variance with divination of every sort. Seeking knowledge of the future from any source other than the God of Israel was an
insult to His holy Being and the revelation of Himself and His purpose for men.”
(See
also Lev. 19:26, 31, 20:6, 27 and Deut. 13:1-17, 18:9-14, 23:17 with reference to magic, witchcraft, sorcery, astronomy and
the like)
4.
False Gods—under the subheading “Baalzebub”: “The form of the name of Baal as worshipped at
the Philistine city of Ekron…A NT rendering of the name is Beelzebul (Beelzebub, KJV) meaning ‘lord of the (heavenly)
habitation.’” Under the subheading “Baal”: “The
common Canaanite word for ‘master lord’. Baal was one of the chief
male deities of the Canaanite pantheon, now well-known from the religious epic literature discovered at Ras Sharma (present-day
Syria)…The inhabitants of Canaan were addicted to Baal worship, which was conducted by priests…particularly on
hilltops called ‘high places.’ The cult included…licentious
dances. Near the rock alter was a sacred pillar…which apparently symbolized
human fertility. High places had chambers for sacred prostitution by male prostitutes…and
sacred harlots…”
5.
Baal—most commonly referred to as “master of the house;” but the Webster’s
New World College Dictionary (4th Ed.) renders it “lord of the earth.”
6.
Satan—“The chief of fallen spirits…Satan is also called the devil, the dragon, the evil one, the
angel of the abyss, the ruler of this world, the prince of the power of the air, the god of this world, Apollyon, Abaddon,.
Belial, and Beelzebub.”
THIS IS WHY WE FIGHT!
